How Does Decking Age? Your Questions Answered

Decking is often specified based on how it looks and performs when new. But what will it look like in years to come?

Exposure to sunlight, rain and everyday use can affect decking materials in different ways. Some will change colour naturally, while others are designed to retain a more consistent appearance. Understanding this at the specification stage can help ensure the finished deck continues to meet the expectations of the client.

Here, we answer some of the most common questions about how different decking materials age.

Does all decking change appearance over time?

Yes, although the degree of change varies considerably between materials.

Natural timber will typically weather and change colour when exposed to UV and the elements. Other materials, including composite and porcelain decking, can offer greater colour stability.

Importantly, a change in appearance doesn't necessarily mean the decking is deteriorating or losing performance.

How does timber decking age?

Left untreated, most external timber will gradually weather to a silver-grey appearance.

How quickly this happens can depend on the timber species and level of exposure. Areas receiving more sunlight or rain may also weather at a different rate from sheltered areas, so the appearance may not change uniformly across a deck.

For some projects, this natural weathering is part of the appeal of specifying timber. For others, retaining more of its original colour may be important.

Can you stop timber decking from going grey?

Yes, but retaining the original appearance of timber requires regular maintenance once it starts to weather after a year or two.

An optimal maintenance programme typically involves cleaning, brightening and oiling the deck every 6-12 months, depending on its aspect and level of exposure. This doesn’t mean that timber which has already weathered has to stay that way. A maintenance regime can be introduced later to restore and maintain more of the original appearance.

Alternatively, timber can be allowed to weather naturally to a silver-grey finish. Neither approach is necessarily better; the important thing is that the desired appearance and associated maintenance requirements are understood at specification stage.

Does composite decking fade?

The composition and manufacturing process vary between different composite products, and so does their resistance to fading and colour change.

Some composite decking can experience noticeable colour changes following installation, while products such as Silvadec are designed to be fade-free, with colours that remain stable over time.

If maintaining a consistent appearance is important, it's worth checking the manufacturer's information on colour stability.

Does porcelain decking change colour?

Porcelain is highly resistant to UV and generally provides excellent colour stability, making it a good option where maintaining a consistent appearance is a priority.

Like any external surface, porcelain will still require cleaning as dirt and organic matter accumulate, but this is different from the material itself weathering or fading.

Which decking material ages best?

It depends on what you want the deck to look like in the future.

If maintaining a consistent colour with minimal maintenance is the priority, go for a porcelain like Zerodeck or a colour-stable composite like Silvadec. If the natural character of timber is important, you can either embrace the weathered appearance or commit to a maintenance programme to retain more of its original colour.

Think beyond month one

How a deck looks when first installed is only part of the specification.

Consider how the chosen material will change over time and, crucially, what the client expects the deck to look like several years after installation.

If you're specifying external decking, our team can help you compare materials and understand their long-term appearance and maintenance requirements.
